Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction is an ancient listening ministry. Although direction is in the title, spiritual direction is often very non-directive in approach. It is acknowledged that direction sessions are guided beyond the director whether that is the emergent nature of the universe or one of the directee’s spiritual relationships. Spiritual direction invites the relationship to something greater than us to be the “director” or guide of the sessions.
Many directors are now using the title companion as a more accurate term for the director’s role. I see my role as a witness and an ally in the spiritual process. I am passionate about spiritual inquiry and welcome the opportunity to grapple with the joys and challenges we face on our spiritual journey.
Unfortunately in dominant culture, there are not many spaces of spiritual witness and that can lead to feelings of confusion and frustration. I hope to provide a space that honors who you are and the journey that you are on.
My approach is contemplative evocative. This means that our work will consist of contemplative or mindfulness practices to sit with and explore issues that are brought to direction. The evocative aspect involves me posing open-ended questions to encourage you to move into deeper exploration.
A Witness and Container
Is this a religious service?
It can be or not. This is open to anyone with a spirituality whether religious, spiritual, atheist or agnostic.
Why do people go to spiritual direction?
A director facilitates sacred relationship and is a witness to your spiritual life. The focus can be on your relationship with yourself, your spiritual relationships, religious or spiritual experiences, the Universe, ancestors, God, Goddess, more than human relations, etc.
What can you bring to meetings to discuss?
Anything spiritual in nature can be explored in direction. Some examples are past/current difficulties or joys in spiritual or religious experiences. Sessions can give you a space to more deeply reflect on experiences and to savor moments of joy.
