Decolonizing Coaching
What does this mean?…Short answer is many things. Learning and dismantling. The work I offer is what Dr. Jennifer Mullan calls emotional decolonization. Learning about and working through the emotional impacts of colonization.
Decolonizing means to educate yourself on the ongoing impacts of colonization, imperialism, capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, etc.
Ongoing personal growth, emotional, embodied, and spiritual work on how you have been socialized and cultured in a dominant culture that is built on violence and oppression.
Racial identity work from a sociological and psychological perspective.
Divesting from areas where you are contributing to ongoing harm.
Finding ways to support and amplify voices of those who have historically and continue to be marginalized in society.
This work is beyond DEI and part of the ongoing personal work of social justice.
I acknowledge the black, indigenous and people of color who have taught me through their expertise, lived experience and communal knowledge.
I have spent the last few years digging into and learning everything I can about decolonizing through personal study, trainings and mentorship. I have significant knowledge and understanding if you would like to have a safe space to ask questions, get feedback and brainstorm ideas for how to begin or continue this process of implementing this individually or in your business.
Why as a white person am I doing this…
For me, this is the work I feel called to do to support especially fellow white community members to walk through this emotional labor together. I deeply appreciate the people of color who offer this work, and whom I have learned from. However, I don’t believe they should be the ones who have to do this or the only ones who do it. This is a burden they have had to carry for too long, and I hope my passion can lighten the burden that so many people of color have to carry on a daily basis.
I am continually learning in these area and reinvest earnings in offerings and organizations that are doing this work led by black, indigenous and people of color.
